The name Sylvanus Urban was the original pen-name, or "Nom de plume" of Edward Cave, the real, original editor of The Gentleman's Magazine until his death in 1754. The suedonym of S. Urban was adopted by his successors, Nichols and Bowyer, who continued to publish the Gentleman's Magazine with this ficticious persona appearing as the editor on the front page until its final volume in 1922.
A finely detailed engraving, with later hand colouring. This artwork has been mounted, framed and glazed; with hanging attachments on the back.
