- Notes: An original copper engraving with original hand colour, drawn and engraved by M. Coote in c. 1780. This artwork shows Dudley Priory in Worcestershire as it stood towards the end of the 18th century. This engraving was Plate 2 from "...Descriptions of New and Elegant Picturesque Views of the Antiquities of England & Wales...", published by Alexander Hogg in 1786 (see Further Information for full title). The book was written and arranged by Boswell, with maps by Thomas Kitchener, and scenic views by various artists. The number of plates varied between copies, but it is thought that an around 250 plates in all featured in the publication. This print was produced from the older engraving technique of using copperplate and also incorporated some etching. The artwork is in good condition considering its antiquity and age and has been mounted in an attractive lined mount, suitable for framing and hanging.
- Further Information: The full title of the publication from which that print was taken is: “Complete Historical Descriptions of a New and Elegant Collection of Picturesque Views and Representations of the Antiquities of England and Wales: Being a Grand Copper-Plate Repository of Elegance, Taste, and Entertainment containing a New and Complete Collection Of superb Views of Ruins and Ancient Buildings [etc. etc.]”. It was written and arranged by Henry Boswell, Esq. F.A.S., London, some time around 1786. Boswell used plates copied from "Grose’s Antiquities", to save time and money in preparing his book, although the maps were original and not copied from Grose's book many would consider Boswell's re-use of the drawn plates as very improper indeed. The number of plates varied between copies, but it is believed that the publication held around 250 plates in all, with some 50 maps by Thomas Kitchener and around 200 plates showing views and structures, often from multiple angles and viewpoints. An original copy of "Historical Descriptions of New and Elegant Picturesque Views of the Antiquities of England & Wales" from 1786 with 244 plates was recently sold at Sotheby's auction for over £1000.
