The full text at the bottom of the print reads: 'Holloa! here's some d__d rascal been stealing the fish this evening; if I catch him I'll break every bone in his skin.' It was published in "Seymour's Humorous Sketches, comprising eighty-six caricature etchings, illustrated in prose and verse" in around 1880 by Alfred Crowquill (Alfred Henry Forrester) with full original hand colour.
  • Further Information: Robert Seymour was born in Somerset in 1798. He was apprenticed as a pattern-drawer to Mr. Vaughan of Duke Street, Smithfield, London. He was heavily influenced by painter Joseph Severn RA, and Seymour's ambition to be a professional painter was achieved at the young age of 24 when, in 1822, his painting of a scene from Torquato Tasso’s Jerusalem Delivered, with over 100 figures, was exhibited at the Royal Academy. He was commissioned to illustrate the works of Shakespeare; Milton; Cervantes, Wordsworth, and later in his career, and to some lasting controversy involving his wife Jane Seymour, for Charles Dickens. He also produced innumerable portraits, miniatures, landscapes, etc. After the rejection of his second Royal Academy submission, he continued to paint in oils, mastered techniques of copper engraving among others, and began illustrating books for a living to great and lasting success.
