Notes: An original full page from the August 2nd, 1845 edition of The Illustrated London News; showing three plates of detailed wood engravings. The first at the top of the page is entitled: 'The Course' and gives a panoramic view of the Goodwood Race track drawn and engraved by E. Landells. The second artwork, across the middle of the page, consists of two simpler wood engravings of 'The Goodwood Cup' and 'The Stewards' Cup' bestowed onto the various winners of the Goodwood Races. The third engraving at the bottom left of the page is entitled: 'Entrance to the Park, Goodwood', and shows a 180 degree view of horse drawn carts bringing spectators and visitors through the entrance to Goodwood Park. These artworks were printed on page 72 of the popular publication, The ILN, in 1845. This page also bears an original ILN Duty Stamp which are not easily found these days. This red stamp imprint indicated that the ILN had lawfully paid the tax due on producing the newspaper. This duty payable on newspapers had been introduced in 1712 and by the time of the Illustrated London News' Inception, in 1842, had been reduced to 1d (1 penny) per sheet and was required to include the publication's name to prevent a black marked in stamped-paper. These are fine antique examples of three original wood engravings, with an ILN duty stamp, that are 170 years old.
