Notes: An attractive original artwork by the well known local artist, Richard Ashcroft. This watercolour on paper is entitled "Cowdray Park, South Downs" and shows a glorious view looking over Cowdray Park and the South Downs, here in West Sussex. This piece was completed by the artist in 2015 and is hand signed on the reverse of the framing. This artwork has been mounted and framed in a wooden frame with hanging attachments on the back. The overall framed piece measures 69cm x 42.5cm and would make the perfect addition to any home, or a wonderful unique gift for any occasion.
Further Information: Richard’s love of art grew from a young age; his paternal grandfather was a commercial artist. He designed shop fronts for famous establishments such as Harrods and Simpsons on the Strand, as well as the logo for the Daks fashion-house label (amongst others), before emigrating to New Zealand in the late 1940s, having been offered work there.
Richard’s appreciation of art was further enhanced as a 10 year old, when he travelled on his own to New Zealand, to stay with family. His uncle who worked for the Australian High Commission in Wellington, subsequently arranged for Richard to meet him. It was at this meeting that Richard was presented, by the High Commissioner, with a book on the German born, Australian artist Hans Heysen.
From then on, Richard wanted to be an artist. He studies art A-Level and then undertook a Foundation course, before gaining a BA Hons degree in Three-Dimensional Packaging and Graphic Design, at The University of the Creative Arts in Farnham, Surrey – formerly The Surrey Institute of Art and Design.
It was whilst he attended his Foundation course at Reigate School of Art, that he met his wife-to-be. After both studying on the same degree course, they got married, and now live locally in the beautiful county of West Sussex, with their two children.
Richard has always been a keen photographer, with his painting often reflecting his love of the outdoors. He takes inspiration from the wonderful moods and nature of the surrounding South Downs National Park and coastline, as well as the varied textures of England’s fine and rich heritage. He predominantly paints in watercolour, but also uses other mediums such as acrylic and oil.
