Notes: An antique lithograph print of a watercolour painting by Wilfrid Ball (R. E.). This print shows 'Mill Pond' in Midhurst, West Sussex (which is now locally known as 'South Pond') painted by the artist in 1904 and published later in the 1907 book 'Sussex, Painted by Wilfrid Ball'. This is a good quality lithographic print that was printed by R. & R. Clark, Limited, Edinburgh and published by Adam & Charles Black, Soho Square, London, W. MCMVII for the aforementioned publication. Wilfrid Ball lived most of his life in London, where he was born in 1853, but he travelled widely throughout Europe and developed a close relationship with the counties of Sussex and Hampshire. His book 'Sussex - Painted by Wilfrid Ball' published in 1906-7 and 'Hampshire - Painted by Wilfrid Ball' published in 1909 brought his paintings to a much wider audience and significantly enhanced his popularity. For the next two decades he painted landscapes and marine subjects and exhibited widely at the Royal Academy; Royal Society of Painters, Etchers and Engravers; Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours; and many others. He became President of the Society of British Artists in 1886. He was also a member of The Arts Club from 1896 until 1916. Many of his paintings were used, and still are, on postcards and greetings cards. The Midhurst Gallery holds a selection of Wilfrid Ball artwork's from these publications; all done between 1900 - 1910 and of scenes in the local area around Sussex and Hampshire. This artwork has been mounted for presentation; it is suitable for framing and hanging.
Further Information: Midhurst is a charming little town on the banks of the river Rother, in the heart of the South Downs National Park in West Sussex, and is home to the Park’s new Visitor Centre. Along the Midhurst Town Trail visitors discover historic Tudor buildings gourmet restaurants and cafes, independent shops and one-off boutiques and over 100 listed buildings with charming local character. Some of the South Downs finest vineyards are nearby. Despite its small size, Midhurst today is a bustling market town and truly a little gem, nestled in a beautifully picturesque and nationally recognised area of outstanding natural beauty. The surrounding South Downs area is equally complimented by wonderfully diverse countryside including acres of attractive downland, woodland, wetland and heath. Numerous National Trust properties, parks and museums also lie within a stone’s throw of Midhurst giving the area a distinct diversity of culture and liveliness whilst retaining a quintessentially English character. The town of Midhurst is also the home of The Midhurst Gallery, where we have been established for over 30 years.
