  • Notes: An original steel engraved map of Switzerland, drawn and engraved by J. Rapkin in 1851. This is a particularly fine and detailed map; decorated with a title cartouche, elaborate border and attractive inset vignettes which surround the map: William Tell Shooting at the Apple; The Cap on the Pole; Tyrolese; Chamois Hunters; Castle of Chillon; Bern. All illustrations are drawn by A. H. Wray and engraved on steel-lined plates by J. B. Allen. This antique map, which is over 165 years old, was published in "Tallis's Illustrated Atlas and Modern History of the World, Geographical, Political, Commercial and Statistical" edited by R Montgomery Martin Esq., published by John Tallis and Company, London & New York. With some later hand colouring to highlight the borders of regions and main routes. This print has ample margins for mounting and framing.
  • Further Information: One of the most popular cartographers of the 19th Century was John Tallis, a London publisher. Tallis was renowned for the very accurate and visually most attractive maps and views of all world areas during the Victorian Age. His star engraver and map maker was John Rapkin. During the mid 19th century many books of travel and exploration were published by Tallis, using the extraordinary artistic and engraving skills of John Rapkin. Beginning in 1851, John Tallis & Co. issued their Illustrated Atlas, which contained maps of all parts of the world. These detailed maps are particularly prized for their decorative borders and the small finely engraved vignettes of indigenous scenes, people, etc. and are generally regarded as the most decorative mid 19th century Atlas maps of their kind.
