  • Notes: This antique copper engraving is Plate 2 from a later edition of "Laurie and Whittle's New Traveller's Companion", published in 1818. Its full title is "Roads to East-Bourne (by Uckfield) Brighthelmstone, Shoreham, Worthing, Little Hampton and Bognor (by Arundel). Roads Measured from Westminster Bridge". This road map has some original hand colouring of the border and other small areas. There were a number of regular, later editions to this publication (with some additions and refinements) up to 1846. This is plate 2 from the 1818 edition, showing roads from London and finishing in Bognor. This edition of the map includes "*The New Road through Merstham, saves Reigate Hill, the New Road through Bolney, & Hixted, saves Clayton Hill, & the New Road through Worth, is nearest through 1 1/2 Mile, to Brighton."
  • Further Information: Robert Laurie and James Whittle's road book was conceptually different from the Ogilby model of following just one major road from it's origin to its end destination. The publishers offered a work with 24 effectively, sectional maps, each covering the major road network in a given area. County borders, coasts, rivers, and major towns were plotted with their correct topographical relationships, but roads were mainly shown as straight lines linking the main towns. Although smaller towns and settlements along the roads were marked, their positioning on the map did not truly reflect their relative positions on the ground. Different types of roads were differentiated by how they were delineated.
